In Ontario, operators born after April 1, 1983 must carry a Pleasure Craft Operator Card to legally drive a jetski. Here's what that means, how to get one fast, and what happens if you show up without it.
If you were born after April 1, 1983, you are legally required to carry a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) to operate any motorized watercraft in Canada — including a jetski.
What is a PCOC?
The Pleasure Craft Operator Card is Transport Canada's standard boating certification. It's not a license in the traditional sense — you don't need to renew it. Once you have it, you have it for life.
Who needs one?
- Born after April 1, 1983? You need a PCOC to legally operate a jetski.
- Born before April 1, 1983? You're exempt — but you still need to be able to prove your age.
- Under 16? You cannot operate a jetski.
How to get your PCOC quickly
The fastest way is through an online course and exam. Several Transport Canada-accredited providers offer the certification:

You complete the study material and pass a multiple-choice exam online. Your temporary card is issued immediately. The physical card arrives by mail.
What happens if you show up without one?
We'll ask to see it at check-in. If you don't have it, you won't be able to ride — and we can't refund bookings for failing to meet the license requirement. We strongly recommend getting your PCOC before booking, not after.
